How to Use Sort Lines

1

Paste Your Text

Paste text into the input panel. Each line is treated as a separate item. The tool works with any text — lists, data rows, code, or configuration entries.

2

Choose Sort Order

Select your sort method: alphabetical A-Z, reverse Z-A, numeric sort, or sort by line length. Numeric sort correctly handles numbers (2 comes before 10), unlike basic alphabetical sort.

3

Copy the Result

The sorted text appears in the output panel. Copy it to your clipboard or use it directly in your workflow. All processing happens in your browser.

Example

Before (Unsorted)

zebra
apple
monkey
banana
cat

After (A-Z)

apple
banana
cat
monkey
zebra

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between alphabetical and numeric sort?

Alphabetical sort compares characters by their Unicode order, so "10" comes before "2" (because "1" < "2"). Numeric sort extracts and compares numbers, so "2" comes before "10". Use numeric sort when your lines contain numbers you want sorted by value, not by digit order.

Is the sort case-sensitive?

Alphabetical sort is case-sensitive by default, following standard string comparison. Uppercase letters (A-Z) come before lowercase letters (a-z) in Unicode order. If you need case-insensitive sorting, convert all text to the same case first using our Text Case tool.

Does sorting modify line content?

No, the tool only changes the order of lines. Each line keeps its original content, spacing, and formatting. Only the line order is rearranged based on your chosen sort method.

When would I need to sort lines?

Sorting lines is useful for organizing lists alphabetically, arranging data rows for better readability, sorting import data before database insertion, ordering configuration file entries, and preparing word lists or dictionaries.

When to Use Line Sorting

Sorting lines is one of the most fundamental text operations. Whether you're organizing data, cleaning up lists, or preparing content for publication, a reliable line sorter saves time and reduces errors.

Practical Applications

  • Contact lists: Sort names alphabetically for directories and mailing lists
  • Code organization: Sort imports, CSS properties, or configuration keys
  • Data preparation: Sort CSV rows before database import for consistency
  • Word lists: Create alphabetized vocabulary lists for study or reference
  • Inventory: Sort SKU codes or product names for easier lookup
