How to Use Flexbox Generator

1

Configure the Container

Set the flex container properties — flex direction (row/column), justify content (alignment along main axis), align items (alignment along cross axis), and gap between items.

2

Add and Style Flex Items

Add items to the container. Each item can have its own flex-grow, flex-shrink, align-self, and order values. The items are displayed as numbered blocks in the preview.

3

Copy the CSS

As you adjust settings, the generated CSS updates in real-time. Copy the container and item CSS directly into your project. The preview shows exactly how the layout will render.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CSS Flexbox?

Flexbox (Flexible Box Layout) is a CSS layout module designed for one-dimensional layouts — arranging items in a row or column. It handles alignment, spacing, and distribution of space between items far better than floats or positioning. Flexbox is supported in all modern browsers since IE11 and is the standard approach for component-level layouts (navbars, card grids, form layouts).

What is the difference between justify-content and align-items?

justify-content controls alignment along the main axis — horizontally if flex-direction is row, vertically if column. align-items controls alignment along the cross axis (perpendicular to main). For a horizontal flex container: justify-content: center centers items horizontally, align-items: center centers them vertically. This is one of the most common points of confusion with flexbox.

When should I use Flexbox vs CSS Grid?

Use Flexbox for one-dimensional layouts — a row of buttons, a navigation bar, centering a single element, distributing space in a single direction. Use CSS Grid for two-dimensional layouts — page layouts with rows AND columns, image galleries, dashboard layouts. They work well together: use Grid for the page structure, Flexbox for the components inside each grid cell.

Are the generated styles production-ready?

Yes. The generated CSS uses standard flexbox properties that work in all modern browsers. Copy the CSS directly into your stylesheet. For production use, you may want to add responsive breakpoints (change flex-direction from row to column on mobile) and vendor prefixes for older browser support — though most flexbox properties no longer require prefixes.

When to Use Flexbox

Flexbox excels at distributing space and aligning content in one dimension. It replaced floats and table-based layouts for component design and made vertical centering trivial (something that was notoriously difficult before flexbox).

  • Navigation bars with evenly spaced links
  • Centering content both horizontally and vertically
  • Card layouts where cards should be equal height
  • Form layouts with labels and inputs aligned
  • Media objects (image + text side by side)
