How to Use CSS Grid Generator

1

Configure the Grid

Set the number of columns and rows, plus the gap between grid cells. The column and row sizes can use any CSS unit — fr (fraction), px, %, em, or auto.

2

Adjust Grid Items

Add items to the grid. Use the controls to set how many columns or rows each item spans (grid-column and grid-row). The preview updates instantly.

3

Copy the CSS

The generated CSS shows both the grid container styles and any item-specific span styles. Copy it directly into your project. Use our Grid Generator alongside the Flexbox Generator for complete layout control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CSS Grid?

CSS Grid Layout is a two-dimensional layout system — it handles both columns and rows simultaneously. Unlike Flexbox (which is one-dimensional), Grid lets you define a complete page layout with header, sidebar, content area, and footer — all aligned to a grid. Grid is supported in all modern browsers since 2017 and is the standard approach for page-level layouts.

What does the fr unit mean?

fr stands for "fraction" — it divides available space proportionally. grid-template-columns: 1fr 2fr 1fr creates three columns where the middle column is twice as wide as the outer columns. fr units distribute remaining space after fixed-size tracks (px, em) are allocated. This makes responsive layouts much easier than percentage-based approaches.

Grid vs Flexbox — which should I use?

Use Grid for page layouts and any two-dimensional arrangement. Use Flexbox for one-dimensional components (nav bars, button groups, centering). They're complementary, not competing. A typical page uses Grid for the overall layout and Flexbox for the components inside each grid area. Both are well-supported and neither is "better" — they solve different problems.

Does Grid work with older browsers?

CSS Grid works in all modern browsers (Chrome 57+, Firefox 52+, Safari 10.1+, Edge 16+). IE11 supports an older version of the Grid specification with different syntax (the -ms- prefix). If you need IE11 support, use autoprefixer or provide flexbox fallbacks. For most projects in 2025 and beyond, IE11 support is no longer necessary.

When to Use CSS Grid

CSS Grid is the right tool when you need to control both rows and columns. Page layouts, image galleries, dashboard panels, and any design where items need to align in two dimensions.

  • Full page layouts (header, sidebar, content, footer)
  • Image galleries with consistent spacing
  • Dashboard widgets in a grid arrangement
  • Form layouts with complex field arrangements
  • Card grids where items can span multiple columns or rows
